"Equity can never become a reality in education if it's viewed as charity instead of professional obligation."

Hate and discrimination, in any form, will never be tolerated in this lab.
This lab is a safe and inclusive space for all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, disability status, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, or immigration status. We value the unique perspectives that our varied backgrounds can bring to our scientific pursuits. We understand that systemic racism has created structural barriers which prevent all individuals from having the same opportunities in life, and in science. We are aware that creating equitable, anti-racist labs, institutions, and societies is not a passive task but one that must be actively pursued everyday. To that end, a foundational component of my personal interests is working to ensure that science is a more diverse and equitable place that is ultimately representative of the societies we are meant to serve.

Executive Board Members: Alexis Stutzman, Markia Smith, Lynette Strickland |
Written communications & discussions
Increasing knowledge and awareness of systemic racism both within ourselves and within the scientific community is vital to creating opportunities that are accessible for current and future scientists. We also recognize the importance of promoting the voices and needs of people underrepresented in science. |
STRI-IDEA
The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access group/Inclusión, Diversidad, Equidad, y Acceso grupo of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute was started as a grassroots organization by interns, graduate students, and administrative staff in 2018. Our central goal is to bring light to the underlying social forces that create barriers for some groups of people to fully succeed in science careers, with a particular lens for harassment, discrimination, and safety in tropical field research. |
